Obituary notes for; Mrs. Sarah (Twigg) Peters

At eleven o'clock Friday night last at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ida Hammond in this city, occurred the death of Mrs. Sarah (Twigg) Peters after an illness covering a period of about three weeks. Her death was caused by a complication of disease resultant from a recent attack of pneumonia. Her family and friends believed she was recovering satisfactorly from the disease and hopes were expressed that she would soon be about again until a few hours before her demose.

Sarah Ann Twigg was born at Columbus, Ohio, May 15th, 1834, and was the oldest daughter of Rev. Geo. and Jane (Condit) Twigg. Her young life was spent on her father's farm surrounded by nature's sweet environments, neither hampered or spoiled by the unnatural things in life, she became a lover of God's own created things. She early developed a taste for books and at the age of sixteen years she obtained a certificate to teach school. The following two years were then spent in instructing the young in various parts of Delaware County. Her father and mother moved from Ohio to Iowa in the year 1850, and two years later deceased came also. Shortly after her arrival in Iowa she became acquainted with John Peters and on March 4th, 1853, the two were married at her father's home on Long Creek. To this union ten children were born: five sons and five daughters; three daughters, Sarah, Anna and Minnie, died in infancy; the remaining seven, Mrs. C. Weber, Mrs. Ida Hammond and William, of this vicinity; Edward of Mariaville, Neb.; Charles of Freeborn, Minn.; and John and George, of Ravanna, Mo., together with the aged husband, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Oats, of Oklahoma, and Mrs. Ruth McDonald, of Muscatine and one brother, Geo. Twigg, of Arkansas, survive her.

Early in life Mrs. Peters united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and began to live in accordance with her deepest Christian convictions. It must be said of her that no pilgram passing her door hungry for the bread of life, was ever turned away unfilled and no sufferer on a bed of pain was ever passed without a comforting word from her, and so surely as she administered to their spirtual needs, just so surely did she extend to them a helping hand in wants of the flesh. Being a farmer's wife, caring for and rearing a large family, she led a very busy life, but she still had time to organize and for many years superintend a Sunday school at Forn Deil near her home. Her activities there later bore fruits in an extensive church organization at Long Creek. A woman of many christian qualities, her passing on will be lamented by a large circle of friends.

The funeral service was held from the home of her daughter, Mrs, J.R. Hammond, in this city, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, conducted by Rev. E.C. Brooks of Columbus Junction. Interment in the Wapello Cemetery. Wapello Republican, Thursday, 23 Mar 1916
