Land Patent 3 Aug 1899 in Marshall County, Crookston land office doc #9817, accession MN2570_.302

Wife and daughter's death certificates list him as Bertil O. Waagedahl or Bertel O. Waagedahl. Naturalization declaration of intent, filed 1882 Becker County, recorded Marshall County 1993, lists him as born in 1856 in Norway, arriving in US in August 1879 via New York. Final naturalization paper filed in Marshall County 1898. Death cert #1917-MN-007149. Obituary in Holt Weekly News June 1, 1917.

U.S. Census of 1880 (per Norwegian records Digitalarkivet, University of Bergen) lists Bertel Vaagedal, age 24, working as a laborer in Hamden, Becker County, Minnesota. Appears to have met and married Martha Wahl or Hval in North Dakota. Family records from Myron Sorter identify a prior marriage in Minnesota, with a son, Ole, whose mother died 6 days after he was born.

According to Holt Township Centennial Book, 1989, Berthel and Martha farmed in Section 3 of Holt township in Minnesota, raising shorthorn cattle and sheep. Bertil was a lay pastor for the Emanual Free Lutheran Church in Ringbo, Marshall County, and conducted services in the absence of a regular pastor

Berthel and Martha (Hval) Waagedhal

Berthel Waagedahl was born in Norway March 17, 1856. He settled in Becker county near Lake Park. His first wife died six days after the birth of his first son named Ole. In 1889 he married Martha Hval and settled in North Dakota near Petersburg.

Christine was born on January 18, 1890. In the spring of 1891, they moved and homesteaded in Section 3. Gunhild was born on July 23, 1891 and died in March, 1929. Elling was born on November 19, 1893. Bertella was born March 12, 1896 and died on August 10, 1916.

Berthel and Martha farmed and survived the hardships of clearing land, excessive rainfall and deep snow. They raised shorthorn cattle and sheep. Berthel was a lay pastor, so conducted services in the absence of a regular pastor.

Ole settled in Shelton, OR where he married and raised two sons. Berthel passed away on May 23, 1917 leaving his wife, Elling, and Christine to carry on the farming.

Christine married Ellef Sorter in 1925. They lived in Section 8 and later 24. They had two boys: Ernest and Myron. In 1934 Ellef bought a farm in Section 34, Spruce Valley Township. Christine passed away in 1969, Ellef in 1970.

Elling married Fern Davis and farmed with Martha. Fern passed away shortly after the birth of their first daughter, Betty. Martha passed away in 1946.

Elling was active in the community, serving on creamery, school and church boards. He was very active in the growth and success of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Elling continued farming until 1947 when he moved to Viking and managed the locker plant which purchased eggs, sold feed and cut meat. He married Mabel Faldstrom in 1953. He passed away in 1957.
