HEADLINE: WAR VETERAN OF VIKING IS KILLED IN CAR ACCIDENT
John Ranum, Over 4 Years in Service, Dies from Injuries Less than three weeks after receiving his discharge November 2, following four and one half years of army service, John Ranum, 31, of Viking died last Wednesday in a local hospital from the effects of injuries sustained the proceeding Monday night when his car ran off the highway and overturned about seven miles west of Thief River Falls. His injuries included a crushed chest and punctured lung. Miss Mary Holmes, the only other passenger in the car, is receiving treatment in the hospital for head lacerations and a slight concussion.
Born in Roseau county, February 7, 1914, Ranum moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Ranum to Viking township and had made his home there since, except for his period of army service. Enlisting March 19, 1941, he left for overseas duty September 2?, 1942 and served as a cook with a dental medical detachment until returned to this country October ??. receiving his discharge at Camp McCoy, WI. Surviving his death in addition to his parents, are six sisters, including Mrs. Florence Ueland and Mrs. Elsie Hodik both of Newfolden; Mrs. Isabelle Bates, Wilmar; and Mrs. Alice Kesar, Deloris and Margaret Ranum, all of Viking and four brothers, Lloyd, Stanford, and Sidney Ranum, all of Viking, and Stanley Ranum of Warren.
