Lee Hammond Dies

Lee Hammond, 65, former Estherville businessman, died yesterday at 5:20 p.m. at the Good Samaritan Center. Mr. Hammond, in failing health for some time, had been seriously ill for the past three weeks.

Mr. Hammond came to Estherville in 1951 and started the Hammond Oil Company with his son, Robert Hammond, and his son-in-law, Roy Stroud. He had been semi-retired from business for several years but had continued as bookkeeper for Hammond Oil Co. until recently.

Lee L. Hammond was born April 30, 1901, at Beaver, in Boone County, the son of Benjamin and Carrie [Davis] Hammond.

He was married Oct. 31, 1926 to Mae Kingston in Minneapolis. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Hammond lived at Farmington and Rochester, Minn. and at Cresco before coming to Estherville in 1951. Mrs. Hammond died in 1955.

Mr. Hammond was remarried in November, 1960, to Mrs. Marjorie Rempel.

He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the Masonic Lodge, Rotary and had been a past president of the Emmet County Republicans.

He is survived by his widow; one son, Robert of Estherville; a daughter, Mrs. Roy (Helen) Stroud of Estherville; five grandchildren; four brothers, O.C. Hammond of Albert Lea, Minn., Ivan and Raymond, both of Radcliffe, and Albert of Hayfield, Minn.; and four sisters, Mrs. Joe Carter of Minneapolis, Mrs. Verne Budlong of Brainerd, Minn., and Mrs. Ruth Ostendorf of Roland and Mrs. Grace Morris of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services for Mr. Hammond are to be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, Rev. Charles du Bois officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Masonic rites will be held at the graveside.

Friends may call at Fuhrman Funeral Home anytime Sunday until time of services Monday.

A memorial fund has been established by his family. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 21, 1966)
